Need write up for Sondipon

Our school magazine "Sondipon" will reappear at our upcoming DRMC Renion on July 3rd. Please send your your write up(s) to Raihan Ahmed by June 18th at raihansden@yahoo. com.

You may write your favorite story, memoir, poem or on any other topic within 1,000 words either in Bangla or English. Please don't send any pdf copy. All write ups are needed in word documents. Bangla typed write ups may be in either Unicode or Bijoy format. For technical assistance, please contact me.

In addition, you may send your favorite school picture for Sondipon. To support "Sondipon", you may put a half page/fullpage personal advertisement only for $25/$50. All reunion participants and sponsors will get free copies of "Sondipon".

Registration for July 3rd Golden Jubilee

It is time for celebration to observe the 50th Anniversary of the Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC/RMS) on July 3rd at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tysons Corner, Virginia. The registration deadline June 3rd is approaching very fast. In order to register, please pay in advance for the Gala Dinner on July 3rd for $51 per person and $25 for children under 12. Your registration payment ($51) includes cost for buffet dinner, ball room rental, gratuity (22%) and service tax (5%).

Distribution of the REMIANS in the USA

We are really curious about the whereabouts of the REMIANS in the USA. Based on the current draft directory, we have found that the REMIANS are scattered in 19 States. The other category represents REMIANS from Michigan, Connecticut, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia and Utah.

Use your year of graduation

It would be really nice if each and everyone of us could sign our SSC or HSC graduation year with each individual posting and e-mail exchange. That way, we will know how to address each other and ensure that we will be addressing our seniors with approprite courtesy and respect. It will certainly make commenting a who...le lot easier on a DRMC Global member's posting. May I request that all DRMC members to adopt this practice if they like the idea. I am quite confident that this page will be more active if we do so.

Our Venue for the Golden Jubilee Event in July

We're pleased to announce that the host team in Washington DC is diligently working on venue(s) for the upcoming July 4th event.  We're working with the several REMIANS involved into the hospitality business who are assisting us to find a suitable conference venue.  We need actual head counts of the attendees who will join us for the event on July 3rd and 4th. Let us know if you are planning to join the Golden Jubilee event of the Dhaka Residential Model College.  You will hear more updates by March 27th during our 2nd phone conference call.

2nd Telephone Conference

Our next phone conference will take place on Saturday, March 27th at 7:30 PM (EST). A US dial up number and free access code will be provided to all the interested REMIANS.  Let us know your thoughts and suggestions.

Remians Reunion 2010

First phone conference meeting for Remians reunion 2010 was conducted on March 6th, 2010. About 20-22 Remians participated in the meeting (1971 – 1996). Distribution of Remians current location was wide spread (Toronto, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Arizona, and California). This meeting was very productive. We had some important discussion and managed to lock into some key decisions.

Next meeting will be held within the next two to three weeks. Meeting invitation will be communicated to everyone by the host team shortly.

ঢাকা রেসিডেন্সিয়াল মডেল কলেজের সুবর্ণ জয়ন্তী

ঢাকার অন্যতম ঐতিহ্যবাহী শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান ঢাকা রেসিডেন্সিয়াল মডেল কলেজ এ বছর শুরু করেছে সুবর্ণ জয়ন্তী উদযাপন। ঢাকার মোহাম্মদপুর এলাকায় মীরপুর রোড সংলগ্ন পঞ্চাশ একর জমির উপর গড়ে উঠা এই আবাসিক শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান ১৯৬০ সালে যাত্রা শুরু করে। সুবর্ণ জয়ন্তীর এই লগ্নে একজন গর্বিত প্রাক্তন ছাত্র (রেমিয়্যানস) হিসেবে নিজের অজান্তেই বেশ স্মৃতিকাতর হয়ে পড়ি। এই পটভূমিতে উত্তর আমেরিকায় বসবাসরত রেমিয়ানসরা যখন এ বছর এখানে একটি মিলনমেলার আয়োজন নিয়ে জল্পনা কল্পনা শুরু করেছেন তখন স্বভাবতই নিজের অজান্তে মন ফিরে যায় ফেলে আসা রঙিন দিনগুলোর মাঝে।



আশির দশকের মধ্যভাগ থেকে যখন আমি মডেল স্কুলে অধ্যয়ন শুরু করি তখন কলেজের অধ্যক্ষ ছিলেন কর্নেল জিয়াউদ্দীন। তার সময়ে কঠোর নিয়মানুবর্তিতা আরোপ করে স্কুলে অনেক গুণগত পরিবর্তন আনার প্রয়াস লক্ষণীয় ছিল। শুভ্র সাদা ইউনিফর্মে সাপ্তাহিক পরিস্কার-পরিচ্ছন্নতা সহ সাংস্কৃতিক প্রতিযোগিতা শেষ করে পরের দিন কুচকাওয়াজের পর ফলাফল ঘোষণার আগ পর্যন্ত টান টান উত্তেজনা থাকত আমাদের সবার মাঝে। কোন ক্লাশ আর ছাত্রাবাস শ্রেষ্ঠ হবে তা নিয়ে ছিল উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে পাওয়া তীব্র প্রতিযোগিতা ও ঈর্ষা। কঠোর নিয়মানুবর্তিতার মধ্যে নিয়মের শৃংখল ভাঙ্গারও একটা অলিখিত প্রতিযোগিতা হতো। প্রিন্সিপাল স্যারের বাসার গাছ থেকে আম চুরি করার মধ্যে আমাদের অনেকে তীব্র দুরন্তপনার এক্সাইটমেন্ট খুঁজে পেত। এসময় দেশের অন্যান্য মডেল স্কুলগুলো ক্যাডেট কলেজে রুপান্তরিত হলেও শেষ পর্যন্ত আমাদের কলেজ রক্ষা পেল।

এখানকার সবুজ প্রান্তর শহরের ব্যস্ত ও জনাকীর্ণতার বাইরে এক খন্ড মুক্তাঙ্গন। এখানকার স্কুলের শিক্ষার বিশেষত্ব ছিল শুধু লেখাপড়া নয়, বরং একজন অল-রাউন্ডার মডেল ছাত্র তৈরী করার একটি পরিশীলিত অনুশীলনে সবাইকে অভ্যস্ত করা। নিজের হাতে বাথরুম পরিস্কার করা শুরু থেকে সাংস্কৃতিক পরিমন্ডলকে সমৃদ্ধ করার মতো সব ধরণের এক্সট্রা কারিকুলার কার্যক্রমে সব ছাত্রকে নিয়মিতভাবে ও বাধ্যতামূলকভাবে যোগ দিতে হতো। এই অনুশীলন পরবর্তী জীবনে যে বিশেষভাবে কাজে লেগেছে তা বলাই বাহুল্য। শিক্ষকদের নি:শর্ত ভালবাসা ও মমত্বের পাশাপাশি সকল নিয়ম ভাঙ্গার নিত্য নতুন কৌশল আবিস্কার করার একটা অলিখিত বেড়াল-ইঁদুর খেলা চলতো। রাতে হোস্টেল থেকে দেওয়াল টপকে বেরিয়ে পড়ে যারা শ্যামলী হলে গিয়ে সিনেমা দেখে এসে পরের দিন ক্লাশে বর্ণনা দিতে পারত তারা স্বভাবতই অলিখিতভাবে হিরোর মর্যাদা পেত।

অনেক শিক্ষকদের মধ্য থেকে অধ্যক্ষ লুতফুল হায়দার চৌধুরীর বাংলা ক্লাশের কথা খুব মনে পড়ে। তার ভাই শহীদ অধ্যাপক মোফাজ্জল হায়দার চৌধুরীর কথা প্রায় আলাপে উঠে আসতো। ইন্টারমিডিয়েট ক্লাশে প্রিন্সিপ্যাল স্যারের বাংলা ক্লাশের জন্য আমরা অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করতাম। প্রয়াত ওমর আলী স্যার যখন ইতিহাস পড়াতেন তখন তার অপূর্ব শব্দমালায় জীবন্ত হয়ে উঠত ইতিহাসের নায়করা। সবসময়ই স্যার বলতেন, "ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে বড়ো শিক্ষা যে ইতিহাস থেকে মানুষ শিক্ষা নেয় না"। ইংরেজী পড়াতেন আনওয়ার রহমান স্যার। খুব সহজে তাকে ক্ষেপানো যেত বলে বেচারী শিক্ষক যথেস্ট ভোগান্তির শিকার হতেন। আরও অনেক শিক্ষক স্যারের কথা খুব মনে পড়ছে, কিন্তু তা অন্য কোন সময়ের জন্য তুলে রাখা হলো।


এই ডিসি মেট্রোতে আসার অনেক বছর আগে প্রাক্তন ছাত্র সোহেল সামাদের আবৃত্তি আমাকে মুগ্ধ করে রেখেছিল। ভয়েস অফ আমেরিকাতে কর্মরত অবস্থায় খুব অকালে তিনি চলে যান। আমেরিকায় নিযুক্ত প্রাক্তন রাস্ট্রদূত শমসের মোবিন চৌধুরী ছিলেন আমাদের কলেজের প্রথম ব্যাচের ছাত্র। বর্তমান পররাস্ট্র সচিব মিজারুল কায়েসও এই স্কুলের ছাত্র। এখানে এসে ম্যারিল্যান্ড নিবাসী স্কুলের প্রাক্তন শিক্ষয়িত্রী বাংলা ক্লাশের ডি আর বানু ম্যাডামকে পেয়ে খুব ভাল লাগে। সাংস্কৃতিক পরিবেশনার সমস্ত ছক নির্মাণ ও অনুশীলনে তিনি ছিলেন পুরোধা। আমাদের বেশ কয়েক ব্যাচ সিনিয়র আদেল আহমদকে ডিসি'র সাংস্কৃতিক পরিমন্ডলে সক্রিয় দেখতে পেয়ে খুব ভাল লাগে। এছাড়া, আমাদের মাঝে বিভিন্ন সময়ের ও প্রজন্মের ছাত্ররা এখানে ছড়িয়ে আছে। তাদের সবাইকে একত্রিত করে একটি পূনর্মিলনীর আয়োজন নিয়ে ভাবনা আবারও আমাদের ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে যাবে স্কুল ও কলেজের সেই সোনালী দিনগুলোতে।
